I was in my hometown of Norman, OK this past Sunday and attended Sunday morning service at my former congregation, Trinity Lutheran.
The timing for my visit could not have been better.
Having freshly written my post on love earlier last week, the sermon that morning – given by Vicar Bill Willenbrock on Matthew 22:34-46 - was to me both affirming and enlightening. His treatment of the topic was nothing less than eloquent and elegant – while all the while remaining imminently practical. Among other things, Vicar Willenbrock gave a pithy definition of real, true love that I will not soon forget (I hope), and one which I will be adopting as my own go-to definition for all of my future discussions on the topic – here on the blog and elsewhere.
Love = Unconditional, unmerited faithfulness, expressed in sacrifice.
It’s a beautiful thing.
For anyone wanting to go deeper with the question “what is love?”, I commend this sermon to you.
