The debate over this one took over the protestant-Christian sphere of the internet in a big way these past two weeks.
Some big names weighed in.
Chris Rosebrough affirmed.
James White went a little hard on Twitter…
…before digging into it on the Dividing Line, where he ended up moderating his position considerably.
My friend Nathan Rinne also took a crack at it.
All in all, I had to have my say.
And I had more to say than I thought.
I’m far from the definitive voice on this subject, but if you’re looking for a pundit who can tie in:
- Victim rights advocacy
- Sexual scandals both ancient and modern
- “Rape culture”
- The complex matrix of modern rape definitions
- Martin Luther’s hot takes
- “Teh Patriarchy”
- Hermeneutical concerns
- The Epic of Gilgamesh
- and More!
…then I might be your man.
I quote an LCMS Pastor in this podcast; his name is Rev. Mark Preus.

Toxic Masculinity is a Red Herring — The Scarlet Virgins Podcast (in which I speak about more about “double-minded consent”; it should be noted that I say some things here about “courtship” which may seem at odds with what I said about “negotiating sexual access mano-a-mano” in this episode. It’s not at odds. I’ll put together a blog post on why in the near future, Lord willing.)

I would be remiss not to include this article by Denny Burk, which I stumbled upon after recording this podcast, while grabbing the links above for this post. As my statements in the podcast demonstrate, I believe this careful approach is the most responsible position, and Denny (and his source) articulates it succinctly and well.
I also hear that Dr. Andrew Steinmann will be speaking on this subject later today on Issues, Etc. (so be on the lookout for that, or catch the replay, here). (Update: I was misinformed, Dr. Steinmann was on YESTERDAY, 10/16/2019. I’m queuing it up to listen now. You can do so here.)
