Tullian Tchividjian and Lutheran Lip Service

When 2014 began, Tullian Tchividjian was in full tour de force in Lutheran circles. He was promoted in a good many spheres of the Lutheran online community, and one sentiment — though worded in various ways — was nearly universally expressed:

He must be a Lutheran; he sure sounds like one.

This got under my skin because I, being a Lutheran, was getting a lot of flak at the time for being chummy with non-Lutherans. Meanwhile this guy could just waltz in and make Chris Rosebrough (and plenty of others) swoon with a simple buzzphrase.

So when Rev. Todd Wilken of Issues, Etc. posted the following meme, I was quick to hit “like.”

This was during the initial run of my podcast with Rev. Eric Brown (The Count It All Joy Show). We did a segment on the show where Pr. Brown challenged me to defend my support for the sentiment of the meme, and describe how I stay grounded as a Lutheran amongst non-Lutherans.

Below is the audio from that exchange, originally released in February of 2014. Which is more interesting as I’ve seen others adopt my arguments post-hoc, like the LCMS snapped out of a spell in response to… something.

And yes, what I said in the podcast continues to apply: I still defend it. 🙂
