Legalism and antinomianism both arise from the same root error:
They conflate righteousness coram Deo with righteousness coram mundo.
Which subsequent error you fall into depends upon which direction you favor.
One who reasons that, because they are such a good person coram mundo, God must love them — he is a legalist.
One who reasons that, because they are righteous in Christ (ergo coram Deo), no one (not employers, husbands/wives, friends) can hold anything against them — he is an antinomian.
